Standing on the Sacred Ground網站。

Earth Island Institute’s Sacred Land Film Project produces a variety of media and educational materials — films, videos, DVDs, articles, photographs, school curricula materials and Web site content — to deepen public understanding of sacred places, indigenous cultures and environmental justice. Our mission is to use journalism, organizing and activism to rekindle reverence for land, increase respect for cultural diversity, stimulate dialogue about connections between nature and culture, and protect sacred lands and diverse spiritual practices. For the last decade we have focused on the production and distribution of the documentary film, In the Light of Reverence. We are currently in post-production on a four-part series on sacred places around the world, entitled Standing on Sacred Ground. The Sacred Land Film Project plays a vital role in bringing the voices and wisdom of indigenous peoples to those who make – or can influence – decisions about the future of traditional lands and the people whose lives and cultures depend on them.

Although the endeavor to create a publicly accessible Blackfoot-centric library is recent, this project is ultimately the outcome of documentary work that began more than a century ago, and which elaborates on a knowledge base that emerged through a continuity of many thousands of years living in kitawahsinnoon. The Blackfoot Digital Library is both indebted and dedicated to akaitapii – our ancestors who observed the radical changes being forced upon our communities in the context of colonization, and who took it upon themselves to record their knowledge for the benefit of future generations. This is our opportunity to bring home the field notes, photographs, and recordings that have been spread all over the world; to respond to publications that have misinterpreted and misrepresented our experiences and our way of life.

Indigenous Research Methodologies differ from the Western approach because they flow from tribal knowledge. Information is gained through relationship – with people in a specific Place, with the culture of Place as understood through our own cultures, with the source of the research data, and with the person who knows or tells the story that provides information. The research acknowledges a personal relationship with the story itself and how it is interpreted by both the teller and the researcher. In colonial academic models, the research project and data are separated from the researcher, who is merely an onlooker. Indigenous research Methodologies therefore naturally challenges Western research paradigms. But they also afford vital opportunities to contribute to the body of knowledge about the natural world and indigenous peoples. The American Indigenous Research Association’s mission is to educate researchers and the public about the importance of Indigenous Research Methodologies and to promote incorporation of these methodologies into all research that engages Indigenous peoples and communities.
